An Expanse is a system without planets or a star.

There are 36 systems in the galaxy, and 20 of them are expanses.
Asteroids may be found in expanses as well as star systems.
The Galaxy is divided into a six by six grid of 36 systems. Systems with planets are named, and both inhabited and uninhabited systems are known according to their location, counting left to right, beginning in the northwestern-most system (System 01: Expanse 01), all the way down to the southeastern-most corner (System 36: Desian System). Also, they are numbered according to their location in regard to the other expanses.
There are no official names for the expanses, save each's location in relation to all other systems. However, inhabitants of nearby systems have local names, steeped in ancient lore and myth.
