Adaptable class worlds are characterised by their rocky surface, minimal surface water, thin atmosphere and very basic life forms. These planets are known as adaptable because they can be adapted to our purposes either by means of terraforming or by building pressurised domes while employing the use of basic breathing apparatus while outside.

Adaptable planets do usually have some form of indigenous life and the terraforming process is known for drastically changing the atmosphere and weather of the planet which can cause indigenous life to go extinct. This loss of life is considered by some to be unacceptable even though any life tends to be only single celled or simple multicellular. This leads some colony leaders to favour dome building to terraforming as this changes little of the planets ecosystem, unfortunately it limits the possible size of the population as building and maintenance is expensive.
